Description
Get the T Shirt that started it all, the New Edition Candy Girl Tank . New Edition were formed by Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell and Michael Bivins in 1978 – 1980 Maurice Starr wrote and produced the title song seeing New Edition perform at a talent show in 1982. He signed them and had them record “Candy Girl” in a small studio in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1982. Then, Ronald DeVoe joined in 1982 when his uncle Brooke Payne added him to the group. The band members were between the ages of 13-15 when the song was released.
Released as a single in late 1982 before the album was released, the song made a slow ascent up the chart, but it eventually peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart singles chart, and number 1 on the R&B singles chart in the US;[2] it also reached number 1 in the UK Singles Chart for a week in May 1983.[1] It remained number 1 in the UK charts for a total of twenty weeks.
With “Candy Girl” #1 on the Billboard charts (topping Michael Jackson), New Edition begins making TV and concert hall appearances, including headlining a show at the Roseland Theater in New York City with Madonna and Kurtis Blow. When the group has been on tour (with international dates added) for several weeks, the mothers of Ricky and Bobby, who are struggling financially and on food stamps, seem concerned that they have not yet received any checks their sons should have earned from the shows. Therefore, they decide to confront Brooke Payne, who says he is not in control of the group’s finances, despite being its manager. After grumbling about firing Brooke in order to get a manager who could improve the financial situation, they agree to give him a little more time to see if things improve.
